Gingrich Warns Of Viable Third Party In 2012… For Himself?

(Nigel Parry, NYT)

Said Gingrich:

If the Republicans can’t break out of being the right wing party of big government, then I think you would see a third party movement in 2012. […] Remember, everything Obama’s doing, Bush started last year. If you’re going to talk about big spending, the mistakes of the Bush administration last year are fully as bad as the mistakes of Obama’s first two, three months. […] You’re going to have a nationwide rebellion at the polls of people in both parties who are just fed up.”

I wouldn’t be that surprised if Gingrich ran on a third party ticket in 2012: his Republican followers (and there are a lot of them) will follow him where ever he goes, non-Republicans would probably prefer that he didn’t have the Republican label, and it’s unlikely that the Republicans will find someone to nominate (Jindal? Palin?) that is even one tenth of the intellectual heavyweight Gingrich is.

Definitely keep your eye on this one; Gingrich will announce any plans to run in “early 2011.”
