NYT: No Gay Marriage Bill This Year, Smith Says


“The fact of the matter is we don’t have the votes right now. […] And the question is not if; the question is when.” – Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith speaking at an HRC fund-raiser Saturday.


Smith said he was still working hard to get the votes but declined to say how many votes he needed to assure passage.

Senator Thomas K. Duane, a Democrat who represents Greenwich Village, was more optimistic: “I haven’t given up hope that it’s going to happen. We’re still counting votes and lobbying. I’d say the situation is very fluid.”
