Music Spotlight: Josiah Leming

Josiah Leming is a 19 (!)-year-old singer-songwriter who grew up with 8 siblings in a money-was-always-tight household in butt-fuck Tennessee where he started playing the piano at age 8 and later went on to absolutely slaughter Mika’s “Grace Kelly” on the seveneth season American Idol (Who in their right mind covers that song?!).  Random, random, random facts aside, he released a 5-song EP in October of 2008 that is nothing short of marvelous, emotion-laden piano rock.  Josiah lists among his influences Regina Spektor, U2, Elton John, Bowie, Modest Mouse, Dylan, Elvis, Nirvana, Joni Mitchell, Queen, and Radiohead.  (What, no Mika?)  The follow-up LP is slated for release in “early 2009” and I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Here are two tracks from the EP that I highly recommend:

Josiah Leming – To Run

Josiah Leming – This Cigar

The rest of the EP is available for purchase on iTunes or streaming on his MySpace.

And for comparison’s sake, the horrible Mika cover I mentioned above:
